Job Title: Specimen Technician I

Shift: Monday – Friday | 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Position Overview:
- The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides essential support within the Specimen Processing Department to ensure the accurate, timely, and efficient handling of laboratory specimens. This role requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, organizational abilities, and the flexibility to adapt to changing laboratory and client requirements. The SPT I works in a fast-paced production environment where quality, accuracy, and productivity are critical to customer satisfaction
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform specimen processing functions including accessioning, presorting, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging, and microfilming.
- Receive, sort, and prepare specimens for laboratory testing.
- Ensure accurate data entry while maintaining productivity standards.
- Transport processed specimens to appropriate laboratory departments.
- Learn and understand specimen requirements related to laboratory tests ordered by clients.
- Adhere to regulatory and compliance requirements related to test ordering and specimen handling.
- Maintain quality standards and departmental turnaround times.
- Work effectively in a biohazard environment while following all safety protocols.
- Keep work areas organized, clean, and compliant with safety guidelines.
- Communicate effectively with team members and management.
- Demonstrate flexibility to support changing workloads, staffing needs, and operational demands.
- Support overtime, weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage as required.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Required Skills:
- Strong data entry skills with the ability to perform approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous laboratory specimen processing experience.
- Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures.
- Medical terminology knowledge.
- Healthcare or medical office experience.
- Previous hospital laboratory experience.
- Experience working in a production-based environment.
