Job Title: Specimen Technician I

Location: Lewisville, TX
Duration: 3+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift: Sunday – Thursday | 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM


Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Specimen Technician I to join our Specimen Processing team in Lewisville, TX. This role is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the laboratory specimen processing department by ensuring accurate handling, processing, and documentation of patient specimens. The ideal candidate will possess strong data entry skills, excellent organizational abilities, and the flexibility to work in a fast-paced, production-driven environment.

The Specimen Technician I plays a critical role in maintaining quality standards, supporting customer satisfaction, and ensuring compliance with laboratory policies and regulations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general specimen processing functions within the laboratory environment.
  • Accurately receive, sort, verify, and process incoming specimens.
  • Conduct pre-sort and A-station functions as required.
  • Perform specimen centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging, and microfilming activities.
  • Transport processed specimens to designated laboratory departments.
  • Ensure all specimen information is entered accurately and efficiently into laboratory systems.
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards while meeting departmental turnaround times.
  • Learn and understand various specimen types and related laboratory test requirements.
  • Follow compliance regulations and laboratory procedures, adapting to updates and changes as necessary.
  • Practice proper biohazard safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Keep workstations organized, clean, and compliant with laboratory standards.
  • Communicate effectively with laboratory personnel and other staff members.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in meeting changing business and customer needs.
  • Support weekend, holiday, overtime, and on-call coverage as required by staffing needs.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong data entry skills with the ability to achieve 6,000+ alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with data entry systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain accuracy under deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior laboratory specimen processing experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures.
  • Medical background, including familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience.
  • Experience working in a production-oriented environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Comfortable working in a biohazard laboratory environment while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with consistent accuracy and productivity.

  • Fast-paced laboratory production environment.
  • Emphasis on productivity, quality standards, and turnaround times.
  • Exposure to biological specimens and laboratory materials.
  • Requires adherence to all safety, quality, and compliance policies and procedures.
