Nuclear Medicine Technologist
Job Summary:
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for the safe and accurate preparation, administration, and handling of radiopharmaceuticals, as well as performing nuclear medicine imaging procedures and maintaining accurate patient and exam documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Verify patient identity, date of birth, hospital number, and other required identifiers.
- Establish venous access and administer radiopharmaceuticals as ordered.
- Document the route of administration, dosage, and technologist initials.
- Explain procedures to patients, obtain informed consent, and complete required documentation.
- Enter accurate patient and exam information into the radiology management system for record keeping and charge generation.
- Review exam requisitions, patient charts, and relevant laboratory results.
- Perform appropriate patient assessments prior to procedures.
- Screen females of childbearing age for pregnancy and arrange pregnancy testing when ordered by the Nuclear Medicine physician.
- Perform advanced Nuclear Medicine duties, including PET imaging and/or Lead Technologist responsibilities, as assigned.
- Receive, document, handle, and properly dispose of radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with established guidelines.
- Follow Radiation Safety Office and NRC guidelines and procedures.
- Select appropriate radiopharmaceuticals and verify dosage, activity, quality control, and required documentation before administration.
- Set up and perform imaging studies according to established protocols while maintaining patient comfort, care, and safety.
- Review and evaluate images for technical quality and completeness.
- Process images and submit them to the physician for review and approval.
- Utilize RIS, CIS, SMS, and PACS systems for accurate documentation and image management.
- Complete RIS orders and ensure accurate charges are entered.
- Coordinate inpatient transportation to and from the Nuclear Medicine department using the appropriate transport tracking system.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMTCB/ARRT or applicable credential).
- NM 830 experience required.
- No prior experience specified beyond the required Nuclear Medicine qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- CT cross-training highly preferred.
- PET imaging experience preferred.
- Lead Technologist experience is a plus.
