Job Summary
The Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist performs routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory procedures requiring technical expertise, sound judgment, and independent decision-making. The role performs laboratory testing, quality control, phlebotomy, specimen accessioning, instrumentation, and documentation while ensuring accurate and timely patient results.
Key Responsibilities

Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing according to established policies and procedures.

Perform patient phlebotomy and specimen accessioning as needed.

Verify specimen integrity and patient identification.

Evaluate and interpret laboratory data and take appropriate action according to established protocols.

Perform quality control and proficiency testing to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Assist with evaluation and implementation of new laboratory methods.
-
Maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and required documentation.

Support CAP inspections and other regulatory requirements.
-
Operate laboratory instruments and perform instrument QC.
-
Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshoot instrument issues.

Document testing, QC, maintenance, and corrective actions accurately.

Use Cerner/STAR and other laboratory information systems for ordering, receiving, canceling, reviewing, and verifying tests.

Review pending lists and follow up on outstanding tests.

Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, pathologists, physicians, nurses, patients, and other healthcare professionals.

Answer laboratory phones and provide appropriate information or direction.

Follow laboratory, hospital, safety, and regulatory policies and procedures.

Maintain strict confidentiality of patient and work-related information.

Complete required education and participate in continuing education and performance improvement activities.

Use laboratory resources efficiently and help minimize waste.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
-
ASCP, ASCPi, NCA, or AMT registration/certification as MT, MLS, or IMLS.

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, or a bachelor’s degree with required prerequisite coursework and clinical training.

Candidates without a bachelor’s degree may qualify through an approved alternate education and training pathway recognized by ASCP, NCA, or AMT.

Previous work experience is not required.

May be required to work weekends, holidays, or take call based on departmental needs.
