Job Description:
- The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department. This is a production-focused laboratory environment requiring accuracy, attention to detail, strong organization, and efficient data entry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform specimen processing functions including A-station, presort, pickup/delivery, imaging, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
- Accurately identify, process, label, and prepare specimens according to testing requirements.
- Perform data entry at a minimum speed of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Learn and understand specimen types and testing requirements.
- Follow laboratory safety, compliance, and biohazard procedures.
- Maintain productivity, quality, and turnaround-time standards.
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe.
- Communicate effectively with laboratory staff and other departments.
- Adapt to changing procedures, customer requirements, and workload demands.
- Support departmental operations, including overtime, weekends, holidays, or on-call work as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic computer and data-entry skills.
- Ability to accurately enter information at a high volume.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow safety, quality, and compliance procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous laboratory or specimen-processing experience.
- Medical or healthcare background.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and clinical laboratory procedures.
- Hospital laboratory experience.
- Previous production-environment experience.
