Job Title: Specimen Technician I

Location: Albuquerque, NM
Duration: 2+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift: 3rd Shift | Monday to Friday | 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM

Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Specimen Technician I (SPT I) to join our Specimen Processing Department in Albuquerque, NM. This role is responsible for performing a variety of specimen processing and laboratory support functions in a fast-paced production environment. The ideal candidate will possess strong data entry skills, excellent organizational abilities, and a commitment to quality, accuracy, and compliance.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring customer satisfaction by accurately processing laboratory specimens while adhering to safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department.
  • Accurately receive, sort, and process incoming specimens.
  • Execute specimen handling tasks including:
    • Pre-sort operations
    • A-Station processing
    • Imaging/Microfilming
    • Centrifugation
    • Aliquot preparation
    • Pickup and delivery of specimens to laboratory areas
  • Enter specimen and test order information accurately into computer systems.
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards while meeting departmental turnaround times.
  • Learn and understand specimen requirements related to laboratory testing.
  • Adhere to compliance regulations and test-ordering requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all safety, quality, compliance, and company policies.
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues and management.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Support departmental staffing needs, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules when required.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Strong data entry skills with the ability to achieve approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed processes and procedures accurately.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing and specimen processing procedures.
  • Medical background with familiarity in clinical laboratory terminology.
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience.
  • Experience working in a production or high-volume processing environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in a laboratory/biohazard environment while following safety protocols.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with a high level of accuracy.
  • Capable of handling workload demands in a fast-paced production setting.

  • High-volume laboratory production environment.
  • Focus on productivity, accuracy, and quality standards.
  • Exposure to biological specimens and biohazard materials.
  • Requires adherence to strict safety and compliance regulations.
