Job Summary
Performs routine laboratory functions to support the preparation of histopathology specimens and slides. Assists with specimen handling, slide preparation, laboratory maintenance, inventory management, and clerical tasks while following established laboratory policies, quality standards, and safety procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine histopathology laboratory procedures under general supervision in accordance with established policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Receive, collect, label, accession, and prepare tissue specimens for gross dissection.
- Assist with the preparation and processing of histopathology specimens and slides.
- Perform manual and automated coverslipping of stained microscope slides.
- Complete accessioning, documentation, reporting, and other laboratory-related paperwork accurately.
- Maintain laboratory inventory by monitoring stock levels, ordering supplies, and replenishing materials before depletion.
- Clean, sterilize, organize, and maintain laboratory work areas, glassware, instruments, refrigerators, freezers, and storage cabinets.
- Perform assigned clerical and administrative duties to support laboratory operations.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory quality standards, health and safety regulations, infection control practices, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and client information in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support laboratory operations.
Preferred Experience
- One (1) year of experience or training in histopathology, pathology, clinical laboratory, or a related laboratory environment preferred.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of basic histopathology laboratory procedures and specimen handling.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to consistently follow standardized procedures accurately.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling patient and client information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferred.
- Data entry skills with the ability to achieve approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Strong manual dexterity for handling laboratory instruments, equipment, and specimens.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and work at a laboratory bench for extended periods.
- Frequent standing and walking throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry:
- Frequently: 1–10 pounds
- Occasionally: 11–25 pounds
- Seldom: 36–50 pounds
- Over 50 pounds only with assistance
- Ability to safely operate a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment requiring fine motor skills and manual dexterity.
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Completion of college-level science coursework.
